1 cup (120 grams) all-purpose flour
1/2 cup (50 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (100 grams) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup (160 ml) buttermilk


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees
2. Butter or spray a 9-inch cake pan and set aside.
3. whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl and set aside.
4. In the bowl of your stand mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until creamy. Add the sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.
5. With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk alternately, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter.
6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for about 35 minutes, or until a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
