Ingredients:
-1/2 cup butter, softened
-3/4 cup packed brown sugar
-1/2 cup molasses
-1 large egg
-3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
-2 teaspoons baking soda
-1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
-1/2 teaspoon salt
-Icing, candies and other decorations as desired

Steps:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth and combined.
3. Beat in the molasses and egg.
4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until the dough forms.
6. Roll out the dough onto a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick and cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter.
7. Place unbaked gingerbread shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, 1 inch apart from each other, and bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes.
8. Allow to cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
